Day 1 of bikepacking one of the most beautiful roads in the world. The Icefields Parkway runs from Jasper to Banff in the Canadian Rockies, and it's a road I'd been dreaming of riding for years. For paved road riding surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, it doesn't get much better than this.

People sometimes tell me they're surprised that I do as much hiking as I do, considering I'm primarily travelling on a bicycle, and I know that most bikepackers tend to stick to their bikes when travelling. For me, though, it's never been about preferring one mode of travel over another. It's always been about the journey.

A lot of the time I think the bicycle is the best way to explore a place, but the best places, especially inside national parks, are often accessable only on foot, so for me it makes perfect sense to carry a good hiking backpack with me so I can explore fully wherever I want. I really don't know why more bicycle travellers aren't doing the same, being limited to only day trips would drive me crazy!

We’re carrying climbing gear with us on our bikes, and taking a route that bounces between provincial, national, and state parks the whole way through so when we’re not cycling, we can get in as much mountaineering, climbing, and hiking as possible.

We chose Tout Terrain Outback XPlores because they’re great for all surfaces, they’re super comfortable, stable, and fun to ride even when heavily loaded. The steel frames are hand-built, and we’re running rigid carbon forks with 27.5 x 2.8” tyres.

These bikes are incredibly tough and reliable. Sometimes people ask us if we’re on e-bikes, as our bikes run belts instead of chains, and the answer is no - we’re actually just running mechanical gearboxes from @pinion.adventure . All of the gears are sealed up in oil in the bottom bracket, which means zero maintenance, zero fuss, and perfect shifting all the time. For long-distance bicycle travel, these things are an absolute dream.

The first of what will be many days of hiking and mountaineering now that we've made it to the Rockies. It's too bad that the trail up to the world famous Berg Lake is still closed, washed out by the crazy floods of two years ago, but I'm happy with what we got to see, and it's a good excuse to come back here once the trail (hopefully) reopens next year!

This was the best day of cycling I've had since leaving Squamish. Clear views of Mount Robson, and then bright sunshine to make the turquoise waters of Kinney Lake pop. Days like this are what bikepacking is all about!

Arriving in Valemount was a big moment as it signified the start of the Canadian Rockies and a transition to the next major phase in our trip, one that I've been eagerly awaiting for years. We're going to be exploring the Rockies in Alberta and BC for the next 1-2 months, and I can't even begin to tell you how excited that fact makes me!

Cycling the interior of BC. This section, between the beautiful Coastal Mountains to the west and the incredible Rocky Mountains to the east, didn't blow me away and I sort of viewed as a bit of a commute, but that didn't stop us from having a great time and making the most of it. It can't always be world-class scenic riding, the slightly less interesting sections just make you appreciate the best bits all the more.

90 years young, and still cycling. For your daily dose of inspiration, I present Jean, who kindly hosted us as we bikepacked through on our way to the Rockies. Jean is one of the most incredible humans I've met in a long time, and I found her so inspiring that I just had to share her story.

Having completed bikepacking trips all over the world, she didn't start out with bike travel until she was already in her 50s, when she flew out to Iceland, solo, at a time when the term 'bikepacking' didn't even exist yet. Modest and humble as she told us about her adventures, Jean left us in no doubt - this woman was, and is, a badass.

Now, at 90 years of age, Jean told us that she no longer travels on her bicycle, but she still goes out hiking and cycling every week, still maintains an active life, and is still very much on her feet. When we arrived at her home, Jean got us settled in and then left us to it, informing us that she was popping out for a quick solstice bike ride with her community, casual as you like. Later, when we tried to insist on doing the dishes, she shooed us away with a smile. 90 or not, Jean remains firmly in control of her own life.

I asked her how she managed it and if she had any advice about how to keep active later in life. Her response was that the older you got, the more important it was to keep going, to keep doing the thing, even if you don't feel like it. You don't want to stop, she said, or it's that much harder to start again.

I hope I'm still getting out there at 90, still active, still doing the thing. Jean is testament to the fact that age is what you make it, and that you're never too old to get out there and live adventurously.

One week in and we're making good progress, even if we're actually further away from our destination in Mexico than we were when we started. We've had a fairly gentle start, easing into it, but we'll soon be into the Rockies where the real adventure will begin.

After six months of downtime since I finished cycling from Alaska to Vancouver last year, it feels so incredibly good to be moving again. I always struggle with being in the same place for a more than a month or two, the burning desire to move making it difficult for me to be fully content with stationary life.

Wandering blood, nomadic nature, whatever you want to call it; I'm at my happiest when I'm in flow and feeling the sensation of travel. Suffice to say I'm incredibly happy to be back on the road where I belong, and I'm full of excitement to watch the journey unfold before me.

Fortunately, this year I've managed to get away with it once again, even though I'm packing quite a bit of extra comfort gear that I normally wouldn't bother with when travelling solo. This setup also has a lot of extra capacity compared to previous years, as it needs to hold all of my mountaineering equipment in addition to my standard bikepacking gear. That's a lot of stuff!

Sunset atop the tallest mountain in the world.

Yes, you read that right; the tallest mountain in the world is actually in Hawaii. Not the highest; but the tallest. Topping out at 4207 metres, Mauna Kea is less than half the 8848 metre elevation of Everest, but Mauna Kea originates deep within the Pacific Ocean, and from its base deep underwater to the summit pictured here it rises a whopping 10,210 metres, making it the tallest mountain in the world, something I didn't know until after I'd left Hawaii. You learn something new every day!

Hiking long distances in snow shoes is definitely a bit of a grind, but not having any backcountry skis it was my only option for access to the alpine, and with views like this I certainly wasn't complaining!

These shots were taken last month from an overnight trip in the mountains above Whistler, and it's really made me want to come back to spend a winter season in this part of the world. The main downside is that backcountry skiing seems like an extremely expensive sport to get into, although if you're living in somewhere as beautiful as British Columbia, it's probably well worth it!

In currently in Hawaii for a few days on Big Island supporting @wandering_claud, who’s racing an Ironman here this weekend, so here are a few shots from the last time we were on an island together, when we spent a week hiking across Madeira back in January.

In currently in Hawaii for a few days on Big Island supporting @wandering_claud, who’s racing an Ironman here this weekend, so here are a few shots from the last time we were on an island together, when we spent a week hiking across Madeira back in January.

The beauty of the wilderness in this part of the world is so striking. When you see more bears than humans over the course of a day, you know you've made it deep into the wild. It’s raw. Rugged. Vast. It humbles you. Awes you. There's so much to be found in the wild places of the world.

Now we're talking. Call me crazy, but I'm at my happiest when bikepacking on the most ridiculous roads and trails I can find, the ones that are often impossible to ride, where there are no other people anywhere near. I got a fair bit of that during my recent two week loop of British Columbia, with many washouts, trees down over the road, rockslides, and even snow.

I actually had to haul my bike up a cliff at one point, which would have been impossible if someone hadn't thoughtfully left some rope, although I think it was intended to help hikers rather than people with heavily loaded mountain bikes!

There's just something very fun about overcoming challenge and dragging my bike into places in which a bike has no reasonable business being. The views are also usually better, there's no traffic, and on the best sections I saw more bears than humans, which always makes me happy.

We are BACK! 🤟

I’ve just finished off my first real bikepacking trip of the year, a two-week loop around British Columbia to get warmed up for the ride down to Mexico over the rest of 2024. It’s been an incredible fortnight, with all of the things I look for in a good wilderness bikepacking trip. Spectacular views, challenging dirt roads and trails, a tonne of climbing, no phone signal, and hardly any humans. I’ve dodged bears, hauled my bike through deep snow, lifted it over rock slides, pushed through many rivers, and even dragged it up a cliff or two; it’s been epic.

Looking forward to sharing more once I’ve had time to go through the photos and video from the trip, and it’s now less than four weeks until I set off for Mexico, so I am PUMPED!

We are BACK! 🤟

I’ve just finished off my first real bikepacking trip of the year, a two-week loop around British Columbia to get warmed up for the ride down to Mexico over the rest of 2024. It’s been an incredible fortnight, with all of the things I look for in a good wilderness bikepacking trip. Spectacular views, challenging dirt roads and trails, a tonne of climbing, no phone signal, and hardly any humans. I’ve dodged bears, hauled my bike through deep snow, lifted it over rock slides, pushed through many rivers, and even dragged it up a cliff or two; it’s been epic.

Time to leave the UK! 🌲

I'm leaving the England tomorrow and won't be back for a long time, so for my leaving party we decided to go big. We rounded up 30 of our friends, rented out a big barn with plenty of beds, and headed out to the New Forest for 3 days of fun, games, and celebration. This was the obligatory bike ride in the woods, which we used to kick off the weekend; it's always so special leading big rides like this!

I couldn't have asked for a better send-off, and I'm going to miss this amazing group of people dearly. That said, I'm super excited for what's to come. Next stop: Canada! 🇨🇦

Barely a week left until I fly back to Canada to restart my bicycle crossing of the Americas; it's been a long six months since I left Vancouver!
